Quintic – The purpose of this web site

Big ambitions for first blog. The aim of this web-site is two fold.

  1. To keep a record of what I have learned and how I have used it, so that, maybe, I can give back something that I have taken from all the forums and helps sites that I have referenced.
  2. To include my thoughts and opinions on a few IT technologies
  3. To create a Bliki web site. What’s a BLIKI, its a cross between  a Wiki and a Blog. Its purpose is for note taking and reference, to replace the A4 notepads I keep filling up.

The site has a lot of content. The Blog stiff is all WordPress but the technical stuff is under my own pages, outside of WordPress. I actually put together a small, but, I thought nice, content management framework. Not as extensive as WordPress, by a long way, but fun and a good way of learning PHP with MySQL integration. Now I am moving on beyond that and am looking to fully integrate with WordPress, but I still want the look and feel of my current site – which is more complex than the standard WordPress themes provide. So its learn WordPress and create my own theme. See: Theme or Self-Generation/

My chronological age is about twice my self-image age and about three times that of my maturity. I have two daughters and they both seemed to me to be older than me by the time they were twelve.

  1. My programmer is trying to convince me to move to .net from
PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on a variety of websites for
about a year and am worried about switching to another platform.
I have heard good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my
wordpress content into it? Any kind of help
    would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Hi,

      Thanks for the feed back.

My recent programming background is .NET, and when I say recent I mean from 2001 when I was involved in a .NET project under the Microsoft Early Development programme. So the idea of using Blogengine.net was something I did look into. However, as I mentioned on my blog, my web server is a Raspberry Pi, and whilst you can run Mono on the Pi, it isn’t (or at least wasn’t the last time I tried) exactly fast. I also wanted something more than a simple blogging site, and whilst I don’t know how functionally capable Blogging.net is as a fully blown CMS, I did know that WordPress had the capabilities that I required. I was already familiar with Apache and MySQL. So I took the route which I believed had the best chance of getting me where I wanted to be, learnt PHP (hardly arduous), and set about learning WordPress. Which is where I presently am. The current published site is a combination of my own PHP driven static pages and WordPress for blogging, with the blog pages just my record of what I have done.
My development site is a bit more advanced. That is an integrated site all under WordPress with my own theme and plugin. When happy with these I will push to the Raspberry Pi.

Probably doesn’t help you much, but my concerns with using Blogging.net would be first the platforms on which it can be efffectively developed and deployed, and secondly its capabilites beyond a blogging platform. The issue of the platforms is less of a concern now that XAMARIN is freely available and DotNet does appear to be getting some traction beyond Windows. The second issues does remain.

  2. Link exchange is nothing else however it is only placing the other person’s web site
link on your page at proper place and other
person will also do same in favor of you.

    1. Do like your site, lot of effort and detail – plus I like Alfa’s. I have a 156 V6 2.5 SportsWagon. Bit old now (2003) but it is so much fun. Am happy to include a link to your site, and will do so, but I am just getting my site together and at present I do not have a section in which it would fit. But don’t dispair. Whilst which most of my site is and will be techincal, I am putting together a general interests page, and I will be please to place a link to your site on that page.
