Graphical User Interface (GUI) Development Projects
Quintic has many years of experience designing and developing intuitive graphical user interfaces, often as part of larger software development projects.
In some cases, our clients have developed a unique software product, but require help polishing the user interaction model. How the user interfaces with the technology is critical, and a well-designed, clear and user friendly interface is key to marketing the end product in the short term, and to customer loyalty and satisfaction in the long term.
In other cases, it's a matter of restyling existing products. The look and feel of software products has shifted over time, as some of the main players introduce new design and interaction paradigms. Just look at the difference between DOS and Windows®, then Windows NT, XP, Vista and Windows 7, and the recent changes in Web browsing brought about by new interaction models in products like Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Mozilla®. Apple® Mac fans are deeply loyal to its unique design and interaction model.
In either case, we can help! Below are some of the GUI design and development projects we have recently undertaken:
Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Plant Design Product Suites - User Interface Update / Complete Restyling
To keep up with new user expectations and market trends, software products, just like Websites, need regular face lifts. Quintic has been instrumental in providing such services to independent software vendors.
One of the largest projects was a complete revamp of the MEDUSA 2D/3D MCAD product suite, and the MPDS plant design system, first developed in the 1980s, which acquired a huge face lift with its 4th Generation release.
Many of Quintic' staff members have been working on MEDUSA and MPDS for its various owners since the early days, and have implemented the paradigm change from tablet menus to the latest Windows-like look and feel, with Web-based components and interactivity.
More than just a visual change, this complete user interface re-development had to take into consideration issues such as upgrade paths; cross-platform compatibility; new user workflow and navigation models; language, terminology and messages; visual appeal and consistency; presentation and layout; mouse and keyboard interaction; data entry and accessibility.

2D to 3D Factory Layout, Pre-Sales Configuration and 3D Walk-through and Visualisation Software - New and Extended User Interface
A new product module developed by Quintic and CAD Schroer Germany as part of the growing MPDS4 product suite is the MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT application, which allows users to quickly generate 3D factory models from 2D floor plans and symbols linked to 3D model files, with windows, walls, doors and special 3D components created quickly on the fly.
The product can access a large number of intelligent catalog components, such as mechanical handling equipment like conveyors, to quickly build up complete process plants, working in a 2D or 3D layout environment, with auto-update between the two. A 3D path through the plant defines walk-through videos, and a new external walk-through review tool allows third parties to conduct virtual factory fly-throughs.
The product required the extension of an existing platform-independent user interface, as well as the development of a new user interface and interaction models for the new tools created.

Software in Aid of Ship Classification - Full GUI Development
Over the past years, Quintic has worked on a large number of software projects for LLoyd's Register Marine Division.
We have developed everything from complex graphical ship structure analysis software and data interface management engines for import of ship designs from third party applications to 3D visualisation wizards and ship voyage simulation software, each requiring a completely new graphical user interface, or a complete revamp of an existing data entry based system.
To find out more about these projects, please visit our Graphical Data Analysis and Visualisation Projects page, or read the Lloyd's Register case study (PDF).
Software for Real-time Statistical Analysis of Football Matches - Full GUI Development

A product Quintic developed completely from scratch, and for which we developed the entire graphical user interface, is Performance Group International's DatatraX® Information Application for real-time statistical analysis of football matches, offering visual match analysis tools, including real-time interactive animated views of a game.

Ship Design Verification "Sloshing" Code Update and Porting
Lloyd's Register Marine Division (LR) commissioned this project, which dealt with specific code which calculates a ship's stability based on the sloshing of liquids in on-board tanks. The code had been ported from Unix to Windows with an MFC based GUI, but now had to be updated in order to be maintained. This project was to remove the MFC wrapper and return it to its original state, but with some aspects of the Fortran updated. The development work was done on Linux, since the code needed to work with OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation), part of OpenCFD's open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox.
Other Full GUI Development Projects
Quintic has worked on many other new development projects which involved a full UI design and development service, for business-to-business as well as business-to-consumer applications. Because of the competitive situation in many market sectors, some projects we work on have to remain completely confidential; some we can describe generically. Below is a general description of some of other software GUIs we have developed from scratch:
- Software for biometric registration and cashless catering
- Software for online procedure and process management
- Software for guided 3D navigation
